School Committee Votes to Hire, Supervise Own Aide

School Committee · Meeting of September 16, 2026

Fall River School Committee votes 5-2 to take direct control of hiring and supervising its own administrative assistant. Vice Chair Aguiar led the push to waive four district policies, with Mr. Corey and Mayor Coogan dissenting; school committee counsel Attorney Spadafore said state law allows it but warned the superintendent likely retains authority to discipline or fire the position.

"I'm not going to go down and air out all of our concerns in a public meeting," Aguiar said. The board separately approved $4.35 million in restructured budgets for Evolve Academy, RPA and the district's Virtual High School, added placeholder funding for still-unfilled math and science teacher slots, and tabled a competitive ESL-programming grant, 4-3, after member Colin Dias cited an active investigation into its handling. Durfee High School's athletic eligibility rules were tightened on a 4-3 vote.
