Fall River school officials are adding police coverage and stadium lighting for the fall football and basketball seasons.

FALL RIVER -- School officials outlined new safety measures for high school athletic events during an August 10 School Committee facilities subcommittee meeting focused on the school resource officer memorandum of understanding.

HIGH SCHOOL -- Officials said lighting will be installed around the perimeter of the football field, including areas toward the garages and pay center, after students were found congregating in the dark there last year. Parking lots will also be lit for student safety. Police staffing at the first home football game will increase from the usual four on-duty officers to six "to set the tone," according to the discussion, with the same standard of possibly increased coverage applied to basketball games "when needed," particularly for rivalry matchups against other schools. The subcommittee also discussed a broader operational plan for police coverage of athletic events for the full school year, with officials saying coordination between the police department and the athletic directors at the high school and middle school would be arranged ahead of September.
