Select Board · Meeting of July 25, 2026
Fall River council panel votes to create a one-year ad hoc school transportation committee amid a $900,000 budget dispute. The City Council Committee on Ordinances and Legislation voted unanimously Tuesday to ask the full council to establish the temporary panel by order rather than ordinance, following advice from Assistant Corporation Counsel Gary Hewiak that the informal structure better fits an exploratory body. The gap between the school department's $17 million transportation request and the $16.1 million submitted by the city administration drove the meeting's longest debate, with Deputy Superintendent Liz Legault and incoming CFO Aldo Petronio explaining that mandatory special education and McKinney-Vento placements make year-to-year costs unpredictable.
Director of Finance Emily Arpke told the committee a budget number would go down the next day, adding: "I am not sending out a number that we don't all agree on." The committee also voted unanimously to send a letter to Corporation Counsel seeking possible billboard ordinance restrictions along the Route 79/Duvall Street waterfront corridor, with Vice President Dion declaring: "I do not want to turn our waterfront into Las Vegas."
